Jennifer Charles was born on October 8, 1980 in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin
to Kenneth and Debra Bernhardt. Jennifer is the oldest of 4 siblings: Amy,
Robert and James. Jennifer’s family moved to Loyal, WI when she was 1. She
grew up on a farm, where her family raised calves and sheep. She attended
Loyal Elementary.
Between Jennifer’s 7th and 8th grade year, her family moved to Florence,
Wisconsin. Her family had a hobby farm with 4 milking goats, rabbits, 20 egg
laying chickens, and about 150 – 300 meat chickens every year. Jennifer
attended Florence High School and was involved in various activities. Jennifer
was on the volleyball, basketball, track and baseball teams. (There was no girl’s
softball team at the time.) She sang and danced in the choir and swing choir and
attended many competitions. Jennifer graduated from Florence High School in
1999.
Jennifer went on to attend Concorida University of Wisconsin, where she studied
in areas that would prepare her for future church work. She also played on the
Concordia Women’s Softball team, and worked as a manager in the cafeteria.
She graduated in May 2003 with a major in theology and minors in both Lay
Ministry and Youth Ministry. After graduation Jennifer was called to Covenant
Lutheran Church, in June 2003 where she is currently serving as the Youth and
Family Director.
In September 2007 Jennifer was married to Faulkner Charles. They went to
Concordia together, where they met in the cafeteria where they both worked as
student managers. Faulkner is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida and
came to CUW to play football. Faulkner graduated in December 2005 with a
major in business and minors in both marketing and public relations.
Jennifer and her family were always and still today highly involved with serving
others and the church. Throughout her years growing up, both her mom and
dad were volunteers, they were involved and led the youth ministry, vacation
bible school, small groups, bible studies, chorus, and anything else people
asked them to help with at their church. Jennifer’s mother, Debra, went back to
school and is now in the process of getting her degree in church work. Jennifer’s
grandfather, Rev. Robert Bernhardt is a retired pastor from Trinity Freistadt.
Jennifer’s sister, Amy Nelson is a part-time Youth Ministry Leader at St.. Mark in
Janesville, Wisconsin. Her brother Robert is attending CUW, and will be going to
the Seminary in St. Louis to be a pastor. James, who is 14 years old, wants to be
either a pastor or youth leader when he gets older.
Jennifer enjoys a verity of different things and loves to try and experience new
things. She enjoys playing sports, camping, going for walks, reading books for
personal growth, spending quality time with family, playing games and has a
great joy in serving the Lord by helping others in need. Jennifer has a great love
for her Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ. She really enjoys her calling as a church
worker. Working with the children and youth brings such joy into her life, and the
greatest thing is that she is able to share the love and great message to these
children. She also enjoys creating a place that people feel comfortable and safe,
as well as providing an opportunity for others to want to invite their family and
friends to hear the love of Jesus.
Jennifer and Faulkner are working together with her family and friends on
developing, creating and building a community of leaders. Each of us is called
upon to be leaders at different times in our lives, whether at home, at church, in
our communities, at work, or in a business. The passion on her heart right now
is growing Spiritual and Servant Leaders of all ages, with good character and
integrity. She also wants to help individuals learn leadership principles, grow in
their personal leadership abilities, and develop other leaders: Just like Jesus did.
